Yamamoto® Nutrition can now present their "HMB 1000". This is a dietary supplement containing HMB or beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl-butyrate. One single serving of 2 tablets of "HMB 1000" contains 2.000 mg of beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate calcium, which is a very well-known and widely used ingredient among professional bodybuilding athletes and other sportsmen. This ingredient has been used for decades to help them reach their fitness goals. Since the product comes in a convenient tablet form, it is very easy to dose.
HMB or beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate is a metabolite of L-leucine that has been shown to play a part in stimulating muscle protein synthesis (MPS), and a certain reduction of its' concentration has also been seen in human skeletal muscle following a very hard and heavy physical workout routine.
The studies done on HMB throughout the years vary in results. Some showed evidence of progress in terms of muscle strength and size when HMB was combined with weight training, while others showed no evidence of any effect what so ever. However, there is a certain tendency that gives a clue of HMB working better in the studies where it was combined with physical exercise that required lots of effort and thus were very physically demanding for the test subjects, rather than the studies where it was combined with physical exercise that did not require the same amount of great effort put forth. Additionally, it has shown more promising effects in terms of muscular recuperation aid in test subjects who were either malnourished, elderly, ill or in other ways physically weakened. Studies that were done using individuals with no previous physical exercise experience as test subjects also showed greater effects of beta-hydroxy beta-methyl butyrate as a recovery aid rather than the studies done on trained individuals.
In summary, HMB can possibly be effective during a diet involving caloric restriction or a period where training sessions are more intense and done for longer periods of time. A lot of studies have been carried out on the safety of supplementing with beta hydroxy beta-methyl butyrate over the years and currently, there are no known side effects.
