Chromium is a mineral that all humans require in trace amounts. The known biological activity of this mineral includes enhancement of the activity of insulin, which is the key regulatory hormone of blood sugar, which also controls the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and proteins in our bodies. Research also suggests that chromium acts directly on the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein as well, although it has not yet been scientifically proven how the mechanism of this works specifically.
What are the potential health benefits of chromium? Research has studied the effect of chromium on diabetes, and some studies have suggested that chromium supplementation reduces blood sugar levels and the amount of insulin that people suffering from diabetes require, while other studies in pregnant women showed helped by bettering control of blood sugar. Some studies have also shown that the supplementation of chromium can potentially benefit consumers in terms of weight loss, improvement of lean muscle and reducing body fat levels. The supplementation of chromium will not hurt you but should never serve as a replacement for a balanced diet and/or exercise when it comes to weight loss and obesity.
Chromium is a common addition to weight lifting and athletic performance supplements and popular among many athletes and weight lifters. Some studies also suggest that supplementation with chromium can help lower cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol, which is the bad one out of the two (HDL and LDL cholesterol). The best dietary sources of chromium include broccoli, grape juice, English muffins (whole wheat), mashed potatoes, dried garlic and basil, orange juice, turkey breast, whole wheat bread and red wine.
